How much does a $70,000 employee cost in Australia?

A $70,000 base salary plus 12% super is $78,400 a year before other costs. With an illustrative 1.5% workers compensation allowance ($1,050), no payroll tax allowance and $1,000 of other costs, the budget becomes $80,450 a year — $6,704.17 a month. Replace the example assumptions in the calculator with figures for your business.

Salary plus super or a package including super?

They are different budgets. A $70,000 salary plus 12% super is $78,400. A $70,000 package including 12% super splits into $62,500 base wages and $7,500 super, before other employer costs. Choose the matching option above to avoid counting super twice.

Does the estimate include annual leave?

A full-year salary already pays the employee during paid annual leave; don’t add those same wages again. Budget separately for replacement cover and any applicable leave loading. Hourly estimates use your entered paid hours for 52 weeks.

How is super calculated?

This hiring estimate applies 12% to all entered base wages. It does not apply contribution caps, exceptions or separate treatment of different earnings. The ATO’s Payday Super guidance explains the 12% rate on qualifying earnings and payment rules from 1 July 2026. Use payroll calculations for actual obligations.

Next, find the employee’s award to check minimum rates and extras, then prepare an employment agreement draft.
